Electricians are skilled tradesmen and tradeswomen who undertake highly specialized and sometimes dangerous work. Because of this, they are subject to strict professional requirements, although the details vary from state to state. In most cases, the terms “Certified electrician” and “Licensed electrician” are interchangeable, the term used depends on the state or municipality nomenclature.
The overall general process for an electrician to become licensed (or certified) takes place sequentially through three steps. The first is the apprenticeship phase. After several years or more, the electrician may apply for a journeyman license. When the journeyman electrician has gained several more years of experience, he or she may apply for the Master Electrician Exam.
